Memories of a Displaced Person

I spoke with my grandmother about when her family was finally allowed to return to their village many years after they were displaced. This was her experience:

“That all disappear. Well because they were older already [they went home]. Younger people..like we were left behind because we had already jobs, so we didn’t go back, just parents. So it was not the same, everything was all different. All different things. Not many people came back because they didn’t have houses. Like when we moved… one of our parent’s brothers children married polish and so they stayed in the house. Another somebody didn’t have anybody to stay in the house and after a while it was destroyed; by the weather, not being taken care of, people would take stuff from it and so [the original owner] could not come back. So many people could not come back. It was different altogether when we come back. As I say, many people already got married younger so they stayed behind.

The thing is when you looking at all these things that happening in the world sometimes, the people don’t make it, sometimes government makes the things as worse as possible for people not to be friendly and I don’t understand why they do that…..”

Where, Who, and Why

Who are we raising money for?

More than a million Ukrainians have fled Ukraine, but more than 40 million remain and they need our help. They need our help fighting for our shared values, feeding their families, and keeping their children safe. We still see a lot of needs not being met for the individuals who cannot leave their families or country behind. Ukrainians who stay behind deserve assistance. The quickest way to end the conflict and to minimize the number of people in crisis is with high impact donations that protect many individuals simultaneously.

Why are we raising money?

As a second generation American who has lived, worked and studied in Ukraine, this is my fight too. Many governments are working directly with Ukraine to address the high priority needs for Ukraine’s defense strategy and that aid has been valuable so far. But government moves slowly. And some organizations are tied down by politics and don’t want to get directly involved, preferring to work outside an active conflict. We are working directly with teachers, soldiers, and citizens in Ukraine to address their operational and safety needs. 100% of donations go to supplies and we cover any expenses associated with shipping or duties.

Where is the money going?

A trusted contact has given us the message that key equipment and infrastructure has been damaged. We aim to provide additional navigation equipment relied upon by the troops. Our goal is to raise $20K in order to help give the defenders their best chance in protecting civilians and the fate of Ukraine. Any extra funds raised will be used to buy emergency survival equipment for citizens in cities soon to be besieged.
