Memories of a Displaced Person
I spoke with my grandmother about when her family was finally allowed to return to their village many years after they were displaced. This was her experience:
“That all disappear. Well because they were older already [they went home]. Younger people..like we were left behind because we had already jobs, so we didn’t go back, just parents. So it was not the same, everything was all different. All different things. Not many people came back because they didn’t have houses. Like when we moved… one of our parent’s brothers children married polish and so they stayed in the house. Another somebody didn’t have anybody to stay in the house and after a while it was destroyed; by the weather, not being taken care of, people would take stuff from it and so [the original owner] could not come back. So many people could not come back. It was different altogether when we come back. As I say, many people already got married younger so they stayed behind.
The thing is when you looking at all these things that happening in the world sometimes, the people don’t make it, sometimes government makes the things as worse as possible for people not to be friendly and I don’t understand why they do that…..”
